THE BIENNIAL PAN-HELLENIC CONFERENCES ON NATURAL SCIENCES IN EARLY CHILDHOOD IN THE CONTEXT OF "SCIENCE IN SOCIETY" ARE IMPORTANT AS:
- UNESCO and the developed countries' top priority EDUCATION FOR ALL putting emphasis on scientific and technological literacy (SCIENCE FOR ALL). Every type of contemporary educational reform is based on the notion that the development of natural concepts, skills and environmental attitudes must start in early childhood (National Research Council, 1996, Benchmarks for Scientific Literacy: American Association for the Advancement of Science, 1993, Project 2061: Science for All, Unesco 2000+).
- Research in Teaching Natural Sciences in Early Childhood as well as training teachers in Primary Education includes specific needs concerning methodology so it is not possible to achieve its objectives in Natural Sciences conferences concerning all the different grades of an educational system.
- There are strong researching teams as well as important researching matters concerning Natural Sciences in Early Childhood that have to be discussed within the community.
- Teaching Natural Sciences in Early Childhood provides material which leads to the "opening up" of the university into the educational community and into society by means of making science comprehensible.
- The Conference promotes interaction between Schools of Sciences and Schools of Educational Sciences.
Consequently, the organizing of the 5th Pan-Hellenic Conference with international participation on Natural Sciences in Early Childhood promotes excellence of:
1. |
Research in teaching Natural Sciences |
2. |
Developing models of teacher training |
3. |
Interaction of Science and Society |
