Curriculum Vitae
Elias Giannakis is Assistant Professor of "History and Culture of the Arabs - Greco-arabic studies (7th-15th Century)" in the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Ioannina.
He did his undergraduate studies in the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, where he received a first degree in Philology (Classics) and also in Theology. He did graduate studies in the University of Birmingham (Great Britain) in the field of Arabic and Islamic Studies, where he received a Certificate in the Study of Islam and a Master of Arts. He further pursued his graduate studies in St. Antony's College, University of Oxford (Great Britain). Having done a graduate course with exams and a dissertation on ‘The Arabic Edition of Aristotle's Physics, Book IV, Part Seven: An Annotated Translation', he received the degree of Master of Philosophy in 1986. Having been matriculated for a doctorate, he wrote a thesis on ‘John Philoponus in the Arabic Tradition of Aristotle's Physics' under the supervision of Dr F. W. Zimmermann of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Oxford. In 1992 he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Graeco-Arabic Studies.
In 1989-90 and 1994-95 he taught Classical Arabic to undergraduate students in the Department of History and Archaeology, University of Crete. In 1994-95 he taught Classical Arabic and Islamic History in the graduate program of Turkish Studies in the Faculty of History and Archaeology, University of Crete. In 2000 he joined the Department of History and Archaeology, University of Ioannina.
His teaching and research interests lie in the field of Graeco-Arabic Studies, the transmission of Greek scientific and philosophical works into the Islamic world, the development of the Arabic philosophical tradition, the formation of Islamic culture, the history of Arabs (c. AD 600-1000) and the relations with neighbouring Empires (Byzantine, Western Europe, etc.) and other cultures.
