AKL 601 Introduction to Classical Archaeology and Art (1100-31 BC)

The course is
aimed at first year students, with little to no knowledge of archaeology. In the frame of this course, the main objective is to introduce students
to the subject of classical archaeology and to get to know some of the most
important monuments. Students get familiar with the historiography of classical
antiquity: Schools - methodological tools, research directions. The
significance of archaeological remains and historical sources is also
considered. The most important monuments of Ancient Greek Art are presented:
Architectural Sculpture, Wall- and Panel-painting and Greek Decorated Pottery. By
the successful completion of the course, the students will have familiarized
themselves with
the art and culture of the classical period and they will have learned the most
important monuments of the ancient Greek art.
Educational visit to the
Archaeological Museum of Ioannina as well as laboratory practice in the Cast
Museum of the University of Ioannina.
Preparation of an essay
(optional).

Archaeology as an individual branch
of archaeological research. The subject of archaeology. The research field of
classical archaeology. The transition from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. The
periods of ancient Greek Art from 1100 to 31 BC. Bibliography.

The stages of Greek archaeology.
Foreign Archaeological Schools. The Greek Archaeological Service.
Methodological tools, research directions. The excavation process -
archaeological remains. Archeology and History of Art.
3.
The end of the 2nd and the beginning of the 1st
millennium BC. The "Dark Ages". The geometric period (end of the 11th
to the end of the 8th century BC). Archaeological data. The geometric style
(pottery and metallurgy).
4.
Archaic period: "the Daedalic Style",
"Orientalizing Style". The birth of monumental sculpture. Analysis of
terms: style, iconographic approach based on concrete examples of artworks.
5.
Classical period: "Severe style". Analysis
of the term style. The great bronze works. Famous sculptors - saved works.
6. The Panhellenic Sanctuaries: Types
of buildings. The ancient Greek temple and its parts. The treasuries, the
stoas, the theatre. Cult statues, votive offerings. Free-standing and Relief
Sculpture.
7. Public and private structures in
Greek Cities. Necropoleis and burial
monuments. Urban planning. The ancient Greek house.
8.
Wall- and Panel-painting and mosaics. Written sources
and surviving works. Greek Decorated Pottery and its different styles. The
construction and use of vases.
9. Luxury arts (Jewellery, metal
vessels, engraved gems, finger rings). The use of metals and precious stones.

AKL 607: Ancient Greek Architecture
(Overview)

The course is of general background and is aimed at
students with specialization both in History and Archaeology.
In the frame of this course the main objective is the familiarization of the
students with ancient Greek architecture. Through (i)
the acquaintance with the main types of ancient Greek buildings and monuments,
(ii) the approach of a specialized bibliography in combination with the use of
written sources, and (iii) the examination of the socio-political data of each
period, students will be able to check and supplement their knowledge on topics
of religious, urban, residential, defense and burial architecture. The aim of
the course is to understand the conditions for the development of architecture,
while at the same time, get acquainted with its basic characteristics,
different materials, structures, orders, various types and functions of Greek
buildings. In particular, representative examples of
temples will be examined, as well as the main types of public buildings,
private structures, types of fortifications and burial buildings. Eventually,
general aspects of city planning and organization and of sacred architecture
will be addressed. By the successful completion of the course, the students
will have familiarized themselves with basic terms
of ancient Greek architecture and with the characteristics and function of the
most important buildings of metropolitan Greece, Asia Minor
and the colonies of the West.
Educational visit to archaeological sites in the area of Ioannina and a relevant seminar given by an
invited speaker from the Archaeological Service.

Mycenaean Period.

Greek architectural orders (Doric,
Ionian, and Corinthian). General characteristics and differentiating elements -
presentation of the most important monuments of the archaic and classical
period

structures, defense structures.

treasuries.
