WINTER SEMESTER 2013-2014

INT 816 EUROPEAN ART FROM EARLY RENAISSANCE TO ROCOCO (15th-18th century)

The aim of this course is to present the artistic movements and trends of the Renaissance, Mannerism, French Classicism, Baroque and Rococo. The course includes:

Introduction to Giotto and 14th century painting in Italy in order to identify the origins of European painting.
Presentation of the main characteristics of the above movements and the conditions of their developement as well as the relationship between art and society through the presentation of the works of the main artists of this period.
The main focus will be on the art of the Renaissance.

INT 824 ASPECTS OF EUROPEAN ART 4: REMBRANDT AND THE ART OF HIS ERA

Exhaustive presentation of the painted oeuvre and etchings of Rembrandt under the light of ongoing research (Rembrandt Research Project). The works are examined in relationship to their era and the art of Baroque and taking into account modern art theory. Special emphasis is put on the self portraits and the so-called «tronies» as well as on the reception of the artist' s work and his influence on the developement of European art.

SPRING SEMESTER

INT 809 GREEK ART OF 18th AND 19th CENTURIES (HISTORIOGRAPHY IONIAN SCHOOL, THE SCHOOL OF MUNICH) (Th. Markatou)

The course examines the main aspects of the art that developed on the Ionian Islands by the Ionian School (painting, printmaking, sculpture and references to architecture). The Ionian School is presented through the theoretical and artistic works of its main representatives and in relationship to the particular historical and social conditions from which it emerged.
The course also presents the art of the 19th century modern Greek state, mainly the art of the School of Munich.
Themes in focus:
Subject matter and origins of greek art of the modern era, sources and historiography, ideological background, historical and social framework, directions, subject matter and trends, research issues.

INT 811 ASPECTS OF EUROPEAN ART: WOMEN ARTISTS FROM THE RENAISSANCE UNTIL THE END OF THE 19th CENTURY (Th. Markatou)

The course examines the work of women visual artists, in particular painters, from the Renaissance until the end of the 19th century under the light of contemporary approaches to women' s issues and through a feminist perspective.
Artists in focus:
Artemisia Gentilleschi, Rosalba Carriera, Angelika Kauffmann and Eleni Boukouri-Altamoura.
