• Graduate of the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Ioannina/Greece.
• Ph.D. titled “Diplomatic marriages in Byzantium (6th to 12th century AD) (2001): University of
Ioannina/Greece.
Departments and Institutes
• Angeliki Panagopoulou taught Byzantine History at the Department of History of the Ionian University
(2003-2004).
Research interests
Angeliki Panagopoulou's research interests embrace the Middle and Late Byzantine Period. In specific,
they focus on the political and diplomatic history of Byzantium. She is interested in the relations between
the Byzantium and the West focusing on the relations between the Byzantine Empire and the German
Empire, the Norman Kingdom of Sicily and the Crusader states.
She is especially interested in the contribution of the Crusader States to the changing of the status quo
of the Byzantine Empire in East Mediterranean. She is also interested in the role of the Papal Church in the
competition between the Byzantium and the West in the framework of the claims of the Pope on the
churches of the East.
