INE 354 “Women's history in Greece, 19th -20th centuries”

The course examines women's history in Greece as regards the legal status, education, occupations, civil and political rights, feminist movement. The course also explores historiographical trends in women's history.

INE 407 - “Greek cities, 19th -20th centuries”

The course examines the development of Greek cities in the period of transition from the ottoman era to the Modern Greek state (demographic evolution, migratory waves, economic life, social stratification, urban planning and technical networks, cultural heritage). Through the study of specific case studies (Athens, Salonica, Volos, Hermoupolis, Patras, Ioannina), various historical sources (written, audiovisual, literature, cinema, etc.) are used systematically in order a) to highlight the multiple dimensions of economic, social and cultural history of the cities and b) to initiate students into historical research and methodology.

INE 302 - “The Jews in the Ottoman Empire and the Greek Nation - Sate

Optional course.
The course examines the place of Jews in the multi-ethnic Ottoman Empire and Modern Greek society from 1821 to the aftermath of the Second World War. It will be presented the social and economic activity, the cultural identity of the Jews of the Ottoman Empire and Greece and it would be analyzed key events in the history of the Jews in both state constructs (such as massacres during the Revolution, the Balkan Wars, the integration of the Jews of Thessaloniki and Ioannina, the Holocaust and the implementation of the Final Solution in Greece, the post-war reconstruction and migration in Israel and the U.S.). Emphasis will be given to a) the emergence of internal diversity that characterizes the history of the Jews in the Ottoman Empire and Greece; b) the relationship of the Jewish people with the ottoman government and the Greek State and other ethno - religious communities; c) the various aspects of symbiosis; d) the changing content of Greek anti-Semitism and the multiple versions of assimilation and e) the place of the Holocaust in the Greek collective memory.
