ΑPR505 “The Aegean and the Mediterranean in the 2nd millennium BC”

Tuesday 15.00-18.00 Classroom Α31 (11 February - 27 May 2025)

The course gives an overview of the civilizations in the Aegean region, with references to relations with other civilizations and wider developments in the Mediterranean during the second millennium BC. It addresses issues of historical geography, cultural structures, writing, administration and commerce, and analyses the pattern and the extent of contacts between the palatial civilizations of the Aegean and the wider Central and Eastern Mediterranean.
Optional short project essay and presentation in class.
Grading: Written exam (100%). Oral exam for students with reading and writing difficulties and disabilities.

 

APR 502 Iconography issues of the prehistoric Aegean

Thursday 12.00-15.00 (13 February-29 May 2025)

Seminar on the iconography of the Aegean Bronze Age (Cycladic, Minoan and Mycenaean) cultures with special focus on the miniature art of seals and the monumental art of wall painting. Compulsory project essay and presentation in class.
Onsite lectures in the Athens National Archaeological Museum, the Archaeological Museum of Thebes. Educational trip to Akrotiri, Thera.
