Marilena Papachristophorou studied French and Comparative Literature at Sorbonne ( University of Paris IV ) and obtained her PhD in Social Anthropology and Ethnology from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris . She conducted doctoral research on fairytale studies and a short term field research on storytelling practices in the mountain villages of Zaghori West, Greece. Back in Greece she worked as archivist and field researcher at the Hellenic Folklore Research Centre of the Academy of Athens (1997-2009) and spent subsequent periods of field research in South East Aegean, mainly on the island of Lipsi (2000-2013). She gave courses at the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens (1998-2003) and collaborated with the Hellenic Open University from 1998 to 2018.
At present she is Professor of Social Anthropology, Foklore and Orality Studies, at the University of Ioannina, Department of History and Archaeology, Section of Folklore Studies, where she teaches since 2009. She has published in Greek, French and English (see full list of publications) and enjoys membership in several international networks and scholarly societies
