I am also interested in the etiology of ovarian and prostate cancer. For ovarian cancer, my work focuses on the study of reproductive factors, endogenous and exogenous hormones. For prostate cancer, I am primarily interested in genetic determinants, sex steroid hormones and growth factors. I am also involved in research that identifies and solves methodologic issues, in particular the evaluation of existence and impact of bias in the epidemiologic literature, and use of causal inference methods (instrumental variables) to avoid systematic errors. Finally, I conduct pharmaco-epidemiology studies, in particular I study the association between anti-diabetic and anti-hypertensive medications with risk of cancer. Past work and studies After an undergraduate degree in nursing and a Master of Public Health at the University of Athens with Professor Loukas Sparos, I studied for a PhD in Epidemiology with Professor Elizabeth Platz at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. There, I studied the association of insulin resistance and inflammation with sporadic colorectal neoplasia using data from the CLUE II cohort. I also received a Master of Health Sciences degree in Biostatistics from Johns Hopkins working with Professor Constantine Frangakis on instrumental variable methods. Then I moved to the Cancer Epidemiology Unit at the University of Oxford for a postdoctoral position with Professor Tim Key and Dr. Naomi Allen, where I worked on the association of endogenous and exogenous hormones with incidence of colorectal, ovarian and endometrial cancer in the EPIC cohort. I got also involved in the Breast and Prostate Cancer Cohort Consortium, where I am working on studies of genetic determinants of prostate cancer.
