Heat treatment, alloy manufacture and high-temperature corrosion testing equipment:

  1. Induction melting furnace (made by students and staff)

  2. Electric resistance melting furnace 900C (pilot plant cast system)

  3. Four (4) Heat treament electric resistance furnaces (box-1280C by Nabertherm, tube-1200C by Eurotherm, box-1200C by Tsiblakakis, tube furnace 1000C)

  4. Vacuum Arc Melting system for ferrous and non-ferrous alloys (made by students and staff)

  5. Rolling machine (made by students and staff)

  6. Precision weight balances (5,4 and 3 digit accuracy)

Corrosion testing equipment:

  1. Three (3) Galvanostats - Potentiostats (ACM Instuments): conventional, for critical pitting temperature determination and weld measurements

  2. Corrosion cells (assembled in the lab)

  3. Salt spray chamber (Votsch)

Mechanical testing equipment:

  1. Tensile testing machine (Galdabini) 100KN also performing 3-point and 4-point bending tests

  2. Impact testing machine (Pendulum) ROELL-AMSLER 300 Joule

  3. Hardness tester (HRB, HRC) (INNOVA)

  4. Micro-Hardness tester (SHIMADZU HV-2)

  5. Pin-on-disk tribometer (CSM)

  6. Profilometer (TESA Rugosurf 10G)

  7. Solid particle erosion equipment

  8. Nanoindenter (SHIMADZU-DUH)

Metallographic examination equipment:

  1. Optical microscope Leica DM 4000, with Image Analysis Software

  2. Grinding and polishing machine

Through the Network of Research Supporting Laboratories at the University of Ioannina (N.R.S.L.U.I) the Laboratory of Applied Metallurgy has access to the following facilities:

  • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Unit (Accountable for the unit)

    Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM)

  • Powder X-ray Diffraction Unit and Single-Crystal X-ray Diffraction Unit (XRD)

  • X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy Unit (XRF)

  • Thermal Analysis Unit (TG/DTG, DTA, DSC)

  • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Center
